An explosion occurred in one of the armoured personnel carriers in Mahmoud's convoy, reportedly due to an explosive device or an anti-tank missile. The armed wing of Hamas claims the vehicle was trapped in a prepared minefield.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the casualties as "another heartbreaking price" in what he termed a just war for the defence of Israel. He reiterated his commitment to the military objectives of destroying Hamas and securing the return of Israeli hostages.

In other developments, Israeli police released footage that allegedly shows the rescue of 26-year-old Noah Argamani and three others who were taken captive. However, Reuters has been unable to independently verify the date or location of the footage.

Despite international pressure for a ceasefire, an agreement to halt the fighting remains elusive. The conflict began more than eight months ago, prompted by an attack from Hamas fighters that resulted in significant Israeli casualties and captives. Israel's retaliatory measures have since resulted in the deaths of over 37,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israeli forces are currently focusing operations on Rafah, where they believe Hamas fighters are entrenched.
