Supporters argue the legislation is a necessary step for justice and accountability, while critics warn of potential economic repercussions if countries like the United States respond with trade measures. Companies such as Airbnb, which has its European headquarters in Ireland, could be affected, as the bill's scope may expand to include services as well as goods.

For Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, normal life is lived under threat, with little to protect them from violent Israeli settlers. In the Republic of Ireland, meanwhile, campaigners and politicians have turned to domestic legislation, the first of its kind in a Western country that seeks to ban trade with the settlements in the occupied territories. There is no other place for Palestinians to go. It's only about international law. The last hope is the last refuge. And if Ireland doesn't act, who will? And if it's not now, when? Fatten is a lawyer from Gaza living in Dublin who campaigns for public awareness of the Occupied Territories Bill and the issues behind it. The Bill is currently being debated in the Irish Parliament and, if passed, would set a historic precedent that other countries would be encouraged to follow. When we look at the horror unfolding in Gaza... It was first proposed by Independent Senator Frances Black. We know what it's like to have our land taken off us. We know what that feels like, and I think that's in our DNA, and we see that now happening to the Palestinian people. There was nobody there for us back then, but I have no doubt that the Irish people are standing with the Palestinian people. A former colony itself, Ireland has raised its voice against oppression before, most famously over apartheid in South Africa and its recognition of the state of Palestine. And a recent opinion poll put public support for the Occupied Territories Bill at 74%. But critics warn there could be a cost for Ireland if the United States, for instance under pressure from Israel, were to retaliate with trade tariffs. Others cite a recent advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice that states should stop trading with the settlements as they're illegal under international law. So we're looking at the Airbnb website, and if you just zoom in here you can see all the properties that are listed, loads of them. When we're talking about stolen Palestinian houses and stolen Palestinian lands taken from farmers and families, it is very easy to go on that website and book that stolen house from the website. It just takes one click. And there is no consequences. Airbnb, with its European headquarters in Ireland, told us it donates profits generated from rentals in the occupied West Bank to an international non-profit. But that is business that would have to cease if the bill is expanded as its framers hope to include both goods like dates and avocados and services, a necessary step, they say, towards justice and accountability.
