In the aftermath of the recent conflict with Israel, Iranian authorities have initiated a significant clampdown, marked by increased arrests and executions. Hundreds of individuals, including artists, intellectuals, and activists, have been detained on accusations of spying for Israel. 

Residents in Tehran report heightened security measures, such as frequent roadblocks and searches, alongside a temporary relaxation of enforcement on the wearing of the veil. Despite the regime's apparent leniency in some areas, fear persists among the population due to the unpredictable nature of the arrests and the ongoing presence of checkpoints throughout the city.

Sepideh is an Iranian student in her 20s. It's completely terrifying. This is some of the footage she filmed of Tehran in the wake of the recent war against Israel. She says roadblocks have become increasingly common. A few days ago, in the streets here, there were officers searching people. They looked through people's bags and phones. During the 12-day conflict, Sepideh did not leave her home. She's now seeing the destruction in the city. You see this building? It was destroyed during the war. It's awful. Elsewhere, life seems to have returned to normal with people out in the streets. Among them are some women who are not wearing the veil. More than before the war, according to Sepideh, who has also decided not to wear it. Today, there haven't been so many inspections on whether people are wearing the veil. Not because the regime has changed its mind. Actually, they know that if they start putting too much pressure on us, it could make everything erupt again. They're scared. That would be too much for them. So for now, they're being a bit more laid back about the veil. Despite this apparent leniency regarding the veil, the regime has launched a sweeping clampdown since the end of the conflict. Last week, officials announced that hundreds of arrests have been made. Artists, intellectuals and activists are among those who have been accused of having links to Israeli intelligence agencies. These videos, broadcast on state television, show men who were arrested last week. In this cafe, popular with Tehran's liberal youth, customers get their information from news outlets in other countries. Internet connection has been restored after the government severely limited it during the fighting. The current clampdown has left this Iranian fearful. Since the war, the regime says it's looking for spies. There are checkpoints everywhere. Many of us are scared of these checkpoints. The regime might let you through or arrest you for no reason. Everyone is afraid. Ziba is a 33-year-old musician. Like Sepideh, she didn't leave her home during the fighting and doesn't feel any safer since it ended. Everyone is scared. People are saying the situation could get worse. We don't know. Ziba took part in a string of protests in the past. But she hasn't gone out to demonstrate in the wake of the war, although the regime has been weakened by the conflict. First we had to deal with the war. And if we had risen up, we probably would have been repressed. The fighting delivered a blow to Iran's nuclear programme. But it has left the country's liberal youth facing a weakened regime, willing to do anything in order to stay in power.
