The House of the Griffins, a Republican-era residence in Rome discovered in 1912, is set to open to the public for the first time. Dating from the late 2nd to mid-1st century BC, the site is notable for its well-preserved floors and wall decorations, offering insights into ancient Roman life.

Thanks to funding from the EU's post-COVID recovery fund, the site will be accessible via real-time remote guided tours to protect its fragile remains. Full physical access remains limited due to conservation concerns and the original steep staircase, but multimedia devices will help visitors experience the house as it once was.

Inside one of Rome's most ancient homes

Discovered back in 1912, this Republican-era home has remained largely unknown for more than a century, but that's about to change. From March, House of the Griffins, dating back to between the late 2nd and the mid-1st century BC, which we were given exclusive access to, will finally open to the public. In this case, we have the oldest house of the Republican era in Rome, at least so far and, above all, the house that maintains an elevated decorative system, both in the floors and in the walls. So we have a channel of information of what was a Republican-era way of life. The conservation project, like many others in the area, was made possible thanks to funding from the EU's post-COVID recovery fund. Visitors will be able to explore the site through a remotely accessible, real-time guided experience, allowing the public to discover the site while protecting its fragile remains, a solution designed to preserve the artifacts that have survived for centuries. The aim of the PNRR project was to achieve total accessibility. Total accessibility meant for everyone, but linked to the possibility of using the Domus and the Affeschi, as well as the evocative multimedia devices of the house, which allow us to see how the house actually was at the time of its life. But, of course, it is impossible at the moment, given the situation we are in, because not only because of a conservation problem of the Affeschi, but also because the only way to get down to the house is a very steep, original staircase, and so we do not have the possibility, let's say, at the moment, to offer an alternative system. After centuries, the doors of this luxurious multi-level residence, believed to have once belonged to a wealthy Roman senator, are reopening, offering a rare and vivid glimpse into daily life in ancient Rome.
