The Hurricane Hunters' mission involves flying directly into storm environments to locate the center of low pressure, which helps determine the storm's behavior and development. By using advanced NOAA GOES satellites, crews can better plan their flights and gather essential data with greater efficiency.

During the mission, airborne meteorologists collect information from both the aircraft and specialized instruments, including dropsondes and radar, while also monitoring the sea surface and water temperature. Continuous data from buoys and drones further enhance understanding of the storm's impact on both the atmosphere and ocean, providing crucial information for public safety.

Our goal is to get out to the storm environment, get through the eyewall, into the eye, and find the center of the low pressure. Once we find the center of the low pressure, we can figure out if that storm's growing, shrinking, turning, whatever it's doing, and then we can get that word out to the public. The NOAA satellites that launched just a few years ago, the GOES satellites, they're giving us a better view of the storm before we leave the ground. We're not having to hunt as much for that first point to start the whole alpha pattern of getting into the hurricane environment. Say we're cutting through the eyewall, where the airborne meteorologist is getting the data from both the aircraft and the extra instruments we have on the airplane, looking at the water surface, and we're dropping the dropsondes, the navigator's running the radar, and both pilots are flying the airplane. The buoys and the drones, those are continually giving data all the way through the storm environment through on top of the water surface. And so we're looking for everything, the entire atmosphere, everything the atmosphere is doing to include the sea surface, the water temperature, and everything that water's doing at the storm because what the water's doing is also affecting the atmosphere right there at the eye and around the eye center.
