Influenza cases tend to fall off by mid-February, but the virus is on the upswing and surging across parts of the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had forecast a decrease in cases in February, but the latest numbers show just the opposite. The latest CDC flu numbers are out. Cases jumped nearly 16% from last week, with a 4% bump in outpatient hospital visits for respiratory illnesses. The CDC estimates at least 22 million Americans have gotten the flu from October 1st to February 3rd. Hospitalization and death rates are down from last week, but a quarter of a million people have been hospitalized since the start of the flu season, while thousands have died, including 74 children. And that's just in a relatively easy flu year, to be perfectly honest with you, and we're not done with it yet. Five states, South Carolina, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming have the worst levels of flu spread right now. Emily Landon, the chief healthcare epidemiologist at the University of Chicago, says the numbers are stabilizing, with national data suggesting flu season peaked around last December. But Landon says a second surge could happen this month. Adding low flu vaccination numbers can mean more spread. Even though it can take very tiny behavior changes to mitigate that tiny risk, our brains are sort of set up to either dismiss it or consider it as a giant threat. Landon says get the flu shot if you haven't yet. Doctors recommend everyone over six months get this year's vaccine. She also suggests routinely washing your hands since the flu can spread on surfaces, and masking up and staying home when sick can help prevent spread too.
