A huge fire at a paper mill in Matraville, in Sydney's east, has forced a number of evacuations and a road closure. 80 firefighters and 20 trucks remain on scene containing the blaze.

A major fire broke out at a paper and recycling factory in Matraville, prompting a response from 80 firefighters and 20 firetrucks. The blaze, fueled by large piles of compacted paper and fanned by strong winds, was contained after spreading embers ignited a second fire near nearby homes, destroying several cars.

All factory workers were safely evacuated, and authorities have advised local residents to stay indoors due to heavy smoke and ongoing road closures. Firefighters expect to remain on scene for an extended period as embers continue to smoulder, with heavy machinery possibly needed to fully extinguish the fire.

It started around one o'clock in a paper and recycling factory over this way. You probably see that crews are actually trying to fight this from the air. This is a very difficult situation for fire crews. And that is because what is fueling the fire inside that warehouse is huge piles of compacted paper. What's also making it difficult is the wind around this area, which is fanning those flames. All of the workers inside that factory are OK. They managed to evacuate. But the situation here, so serious. A second fire broke out just over the backside, coming very close to family homes. Several cars were destroyed by flames. It's understood that embers from this blaze were carried by the wind over there. Those residents, some of them coming home from work this afternoon to find that situation, as you can imagine, very scary for them. Let's take a listen to what they have to say. We are containing the fire at the top, but we know that the fire is burning deep seeded, deep into those areas of compacted paper. It's literally just the fence and then all the fire like. So, yeah, the smoke and everything's pretty, pretty intense out the back. We got a phone call to say that the cars in here were on fire and our caravans are next to it. So while this fire is now contained, there are still embers smouldering in there. Heavy machinery may need to be brought in to the factory to actually pull those piles of compacted paper apart for fireys to get in there and bring this fully under control. This situation expected to last for many more hours yet well into the evening and tomorrow. Lots of smoke in the air, as I said, residents being told to stay inside, avoid this area with road closures in place. But Sandra, certainly a long night ahead for firefighters yet. Indeed.
