Local people were evacuating themselves because of small rocks spewing from the eruption. People were panicked and they scrambled. So we will make sure that there's no one left stranded along the coastline. The crater continued to emit smoke throughout the day Thursday. Residents on the northern side of Sulawesi Island have been ordered to stay at least six kilometers away from the mountain. More than 11,000 people live in the affected area and are being relocated. Prisoners were evacuated and travelers trapped at a nearby airport that temporarily closed due to ash. We had already loaded our luggage and checked in our belongings and we waited for about an hour, only to be informed that our flight was cancelled due to the eruption. Ongoing risks from the eruption include the possibility that part of the volcano could collapse into the sea and cause a tsunami. Indonesians have a recent reminder of that danger. In December 2018, another volcano there erupted and collapsed, triggering a powerful tsunami that killed more than 400 people.
