The specific climate conditions in the region, including the El Niño weather pattern and extended monsoon rains, are exacerbating the situation, leading to more severe outbreaks of the disease. Since the beginning of the year, there have been at least 455 fatalities reported in Indonesia, highlighting the deadly impact of these environmental changes on public health.



Indonesia: Dengue Fever cases triple amid warming climate

In Kudus, central Java, patients queue to enter the emergency room at Mardi Rahayu Hospital. One of my children got sick on Saturday. The other on Sunday, high fever and bloody noses. But the ward is already at capacity, with dozens of children and teenagers experiencing symptoms of dengue fever. Our inpatient rooms are full. We hope there will be no increase in patients after Eid al-Fitr, because the hospital is already full. Other hospitals around Indonesia are also under strain. Data from the health ministry indicates more than 60,000 cases of dengue fever this year, and at least 450 deaths, with most cases in West Java. That marks a sharp rise compared to last year. In 2023, there were 162 deaths and more than 20,000 cases for the entire year. Last year, El Nino lasted from July to November. Then there is the transition to the rainy season, which makes the mosquito exhage. And with the relative humidity, it is easier for mosquito larva to develop into adult mosquitoes. The ministry says most dengue fever patients are children and teens. I still feel nauseous and feverish. I don't have an appetite and my body does not feel good. A public awareness campaign is underway, urging people to use repellent and to drain stagnant water near their homes. Meanwhile, the government has launched a pilot project to control the long-term spread of dengue fever. Mosquitoes bred with the naturally occurring bacteria known as Wolbachia have been released in some areas. These mosquitoes have a reduced ability to transmit dengue fever and other viral diseases to people. The research has already succeeded in Yogyakarta and we are expanding to five cities.
