With an electorate of approximately 969 million people, the country's 543 constituencies are preparing for their turn at the polls. In this initial phase, 102 constituencies are participating, setting the stage for a contest between Narendra Modi and a coalition of around two dozen opposition parties spearheaded by the Congress party under Rahul Gandhi.

Prime Minister Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have launched campaigns promising to elevate India's economy to one of the top three globally, addressing poverty directly and fostering new growth opportunities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJ party are promising to boost India's fast-growing economy to be among the top three in the world. They say they'll crash poverty and open up new avenues of growth. Critics accuse Modi of discriminating against and targeting India's 200 million minority Muslims to please his hardline Hindu base. Charges he denies. Despite the criticism, the incumbent is leading in the polls. A very large number of the same voter who would say they are feeling the pinch of price rise but they would say but this government is doing very well on account of various other things. One is sense of pride to the Hindu population, Hindu majority population of this country. Sense of nationalism. Modi could become the second leader in Indian history to be elected three times in a row, securing a rare third term. It's a scenario his primary opponents Rahul Gandhi is keen to avoid. His Congress party leads the alliance of two dozen opposition parties. They are promising to save democratic institutions in the country as well as increase affirmative action and handouts. Voting is set to go on for the next six weeks.
