Charred storefronts and debris could be seen in Kenya's capital Nairobi on Thursday, the day after nationwide protests in which, according to the head of Amnesty Kenya, at least 126 people died.

In Nairobi, residents are assessing the aftermath of violent protests that resulted in significant property damage and loss of life. According to Amnesty Kenya, at least 16 people died during the nationwide demonstrations, with most deaths reportedly caused by police, including five who were shot. The protests were sparked by ongoing frustration over police conduct and the recent death of a blogger in custody, which has intensified calls for government accountability.

The demonstrations also marked the anniversary of earlier protests against a tax bill, which had previously led to over 60 deaths. While the government withdrew the proposed tax hikes, public anger persists, particularly regarding the use of force by security agencies. In response to the blogger's death, six individuals, including three police officers, have been charged with murder, all of whom have pleaded not guilty.

In the aftermath of deadly protests, Kenyans count the cost

In Nairobi, some are making money out of protests that shook the Kenyan capital on Wednesday. Tear gas protector, ten shillings. Others are counting the cost after confrontations between police and protesters turned chaotic. It's so hard. It's so hard. Outside his burnt shop, Ibrahim Hamisi urged the government to talk to what he described as a youthful protest movement. No joke for now. Look, everything is burned. So, please, government, try talking to the agency. But there was another tragic cost. The head of Amnesty Kenya said at least 16 people died during Wednesday's nationwide protests. Most of them were killed by police, Orungu Horton said, with at least five of the victims shot dead. A Kenyan police spokesperson declined to comment. Thousands of Kenyans had taken to the streets to commemorate demonstrations a year earlier against a tax bill. Those protests saw parliament stormed and the deaths of more than 60 people. The demonstrations faded after President William Ruto withdrew proposed tax hikes, but public anger has remained over the use of excessive force by security agencies. Today we are here to demand accountability, to demand transparency. Fresh protests took place this month over the death of a blogger, Albert Ojuang, in police custody. His death has become a lightning rod for Kenyans still mourning those killed in last year's protests. Six people, including three police officers, were charged with murder on Tuesday over Ojuang's killing. All have pleaded not guilty.

The funeral proceedings of the late football players Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva took place in the church of Gondomar in their hometown in the east of Porto. Family members, teammates and coaches joined thousands of mourners to pay their final respects.
