Israeli authorities confirmed that five senior Hamas officials were killed in airstrikes on Gaza following an incident in which a Palestinian gunman opened fire on Israeli troops. Gaza authorities reported over 20 fatalities from the strikes, while Hamas threatened to end the current ceasefire, which Israel claims Hamas has repeatedly violated.

Efforts by the U.S. and international partners to establish a new governing regime in Gaza are ongoing, with the formation of a technocratic committee and a multinational peacekeeping force still pending. Meanwhile, Hamas continues to maintain control over a significant portion of Gaza, and Israel has approved plans to resume operations if necessary, as the return of three remaining hostage bodies is still awaited.

Looking at Gaza, the authorities there reported over 20 killed in Israeli strikes Saturday, without providing any detail, as they do. And Hamas threatened to, quote-unquote, end the ceasefire, as Israel confirmed that it carried out several airstrikes after a Palestinian gunman opened fire on Israeli troops. Now, the IDF said five senior Hamas officials were killed in the strikes, and that Hamas has repeatedly broken the terms of the current ceasefire. But Israel is still awaiting the return of three remaining hostage bodies from Gaza, while the U.S. and other countries are moving forward with the logistics, complicated as they are, surrounding a replacement governing regime for the enclave. It's referred to mostly as stage two of the current deal we're in. To get more on this subject, I'll still have our host around in the studio with us. Look, lots of effort. I'm going to sort of jump ahead, maybe away from the strikes, if you want to say something about the level of, you know, flare-up we've seen. A lot of effort, still apparent, by the international groups, by the U.S., to try to get—implement, I guess, stage two of this, to remove Hamas from governing, you know, Gaza. What's supposed to happen now, in terms of the whole ceasefire plan? Whew. Many things, David. First and foremost, there needs to be an agreement on the committee of technocrats that is supposed to administer day-to-day life in Gaza. That hasn't happened. And once that happens—again, hasn't happened yet—then you need to form the multinational peacekeeping force, the ISF, the International Stabilization Force. That also hasn't happened yet. Once the ISF is formed, then they need to dismantle Hamas' terror infrastructure. Not only has that not happened yet, but many parties who have voiced willingness or interest to be part in some capacity of this ISF are saying, oh, yeah, that's not going to happen. The ISF is not going to do that. So we have many question marks with how this day after, or this phase two, is going to be implemented, when, again, we haven't completed phase one. And in the interim, Hamas is playing for time. It is further asserting its control over the Gaza Strip, despite— Does it look like they're trying to come back and reestablish themselves? I mean, that's the question. I think— They're not trying. They have. —are looking in, trying to say, what's Hamas' game? David, in the 47 percent that they hold, Hamas is in control. Now, today, you have a fifth anti-Hamas militia announcing its formation in Khan Yunis. But again, this is in an area under IDF control. From the Israeli side, I don't think Israel and the Israeli strategists are banking on or counting on any of these other groups in Gaza or the ISF to ultimately clean up if Hamas decides they're going to stay. If they're not going to relinquish their weapons and their tunnel complexes, then the IDF has a plan for that. And I think, you know, from my reading, all this stage-two stuff can be implemented once the IDF may be compelled to complete the dirty work itself, to go in there. That still remains an option for Israel, according to all the agreements and everything else. So, is Hamas banking, perhaps, that Israel has lost its appetite for that kind of activity after releasing the hostages? What appears to be the game? Will, do you think there's a scenario where they're allowed to stay in this situation? Look, for Hamas, a victory is simply staying around. And so, as long as Hamas remains in Gaza, in their eyes, they've won the war. And so, they don't want to squander that success. And so, ultimately, they're going to drag their feet. They're going to, you know, convince the mediators that they're willing to engage in whatever they need to do to implement the deal. That's why we're seeing this staggered release of the bodies of hostages, but they still haven't released all of them. Ultimately, it is up to Israel that has approved battle plans to resume, whether they're going to let the ISF do it or it's going to be the IDF, ultimately, according to various statements, and also history, it is most likely going to be the latter.
