Kentucky Derby hats have been a longtime tradition, and these business owners are putting in the work to keep it alive. If I have to do custom dyeing or hand beading or I'm incorporating fabric from a client's outfit into the hat, it can take sometimes, especially during the busy season, it can take up to six weeks to make one. It's a lot of planning ahead and seeing what the trends are for the next year. We do a lot of photo shoots. We do fashion shows. We do pop-up stores. We look at the magazines and we look on social media and we look on the internet to see what's going on with the fashion shows in Milan and Europe and all that. All this time, work and effort comes at a price. Business owner Jessica Shigley says you can expect to pay $300 to $500 for a piece. This piece, let's see, but this yellow band that's on the crown there, it's actually made from jockey silks from Becker and Durfsky Turfskood, and they make all of the jockey silks for Churchill Downs. I have a series of hats that actually incorporate those remnants that have been run in races at Churchill Downs. I tell ladies when they come in, especially out-of-towners, and they don't want to go too big or too bright or bold, I tell them, if you don't, I said, you will regret it.
