A Louisiana Marine Corps veteran reports that his wife, Paula Cluot, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during a routine immigration appointment. The couple, who recently moved from California and were in the process of obtaining a green card, were surprised when ICE agents arrested Paula at the New Orleans field office. Paula, originally from Mexico, was brought to the US as a minor under asylum and was reportedly unaware of a deportation order issued in 2018, which the government claims she ignored. Her husband, Adrian Cluot, is now caring for their two children, both under two years old, and making long trips to visit Paula at the detention facility. He is working with an attorney to resolve the situation and has expressed frustration with the lack of communication from ICE.

A Louisiana Marine Corps veteran says immigration and customs enforcement agents detained his wife during a routine immigration appointment. Adrian Cluot and his wife were in the process of obtaining a green card. Now he is raising their two children, who are both less than two years old. CBS News reporter Katie Weiss spoke with Cluot this afternoon, and she's joining us now from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Katie, what did he tell you? Well, Baton Rouge here, this city, this is where they live. They had just moved here back in November from California, where they originally met. He says that his wife, Paula Cluot, was originally born in Mexico and was brought over here more than a decade ago by her mother when she was still a minor under asylum. She had no idea that she would be treated in this manner. In fact, they got married a year ago and had applied through all the proper channels for her to get a green card. When they came into the New Orleans ICE field office, they were totally shocked to see three ICE agents approach them and arrest her. Now, she's still breastfeeding their infant daughter, who was only nine weeks old when his wife was detained. And now he's feeding their infant with formula, something that she wanted, she didn't want to do. She wanted to be breastfeeding with her baby. He says that he's also driving his children now twice a week, an eight-hour round trip to Monroe, Louisiana, where his wife is being detained. Take a listen to what this experience has been like for him. I felt betrayed. They told us we had passed the interview and to wait for paperwork for our next one. Not only that, they knew I was a veteran. They knew that my wife was breastfeeding our nine-week-old daughter. They just ripped her away from me and her children, from her breastfeeding the newborn daughter. It's almost inhumane. I cried the whole way to my car after I left the building. What was the last thing you said to your wife? I told her I love you and I'm going to get you out. I'm going to bring you back home. And now he's working with an attorney to do just that. Liz? And Katie, what's the government saying about all of this and what challenges is he facing to get her out of that facility? Well, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Department, they claim that she was actually issued a deportation order back in 2018 that she ignored. However, her husband says that, in fact, she had no idea that she was issued this order, that it was ordered against her mother. And she and her mother were estranged at the time, that her mother had actually abandoned her. Her mother was actually technically a homeless minor at the time, so had gone through quite the tricky and terrible childhood. So had no idea that this was something against her, that, in fact, she didn't know about this deportation order until just a week before this whole incident at the ICE field office in New Orleans. And so they had gone in willingly, trying to do the right thing and go through the proper channels, being honest with the immigration officials, never in a million years imagining that that is what would happen as a result. And so now he's just still continuing to go through the proper channels, but this time more aggressively with an attorney. And he says that, actually, he's been trying to call the customer service line to ICE, to the New Orleans field office, and he says that that customer service phone line doesn't even work, that it says you have the wrong number when you call.
