Dangerous rip currents and storm surge flooding from Erin will hit the Outer Banks especially hard, even if the hurricane itself doesn't make landfall.

Hurricane Erin, which reached Category 5 status before weakening slightly to Category 4, is currently moving offshore near the US east coast. The storm has caused flooding and mudslides in the Dominican Republic and warnings are in effect for the Turks and Caicos, with Bermuda also preparing for rough seas as Erin tracks northward.

Emergency measures, including a state of emergency and mandatory evacuations, have been enacted in parts of North Carolina, particularly Hatteras Island. While the hurricane's eye is expected to remain well offshore, its large size is generating significant waves, coastal flooding, and dangerous rip currents along the east coast of the United States and Maritime Canada. The outer banks of North Carolina are forecast to experience storm surges of three to six feet, with damaging winds and hazardous surf conditions expected to persist as the storm continues its path.

Hurricane Erin to churn offshore

We are tracking the latest here with Hurricane Aaron and it reached. Category 5 status over the weekend. Now we're still seeing the wind intensity maintaining as a Category 4. And this is going to be a very impactful storm as we go forward. So Aaron right now maintaining as a Category 4 hurricane. It does look like the wind intensity will bring it down to a three here as we had throughout Tuesday, Wednesday, even as we had in a Thursday. But during that time frame, a major hurricane will still be close enough to the East Coast of the United States to bring widespread impacts, especially to the coast of North Carolina. But right now, Aaron continues to churn just offshore as that major hurricane. The storm has already brought flooding and mudslides to the Dominican Republic with warnings in effect for the Turks and Caicos. Bermuda is bracing for rough seas as well as Aaron starts that northward track. In the meantime, a state of emergency is in effect for Derrick County in North Carolina with mandatory evacuations on Hatteras Island. While the eye will stay well offshore, Aaron's size will send 15 or 5 to 15 foot waves, coastal flooding and dangerous rip currents to parts of the East Coast. And we're going to be tracking this very closely. First, go and give you a live look at one of the impacted areas right now, Turks and Caicos. And you see more rainfall on that lens. But once again, I just want to point out that those waves are coming up and you can also see those palm trees right there are definitely blowing in the wind and we're seeing a big impact there to the Turks and Caicos. And that will continue here even as we head throughout this evening, even as we head into tonight. So here's a look at the latest. There's that overall view here of the eye path there are active exclusive eye path there for Aaron. The latest numbers on Aaron still maintaining winds of 140 miles an hour, which puts it at a category four hurricane. And overall, you can see that the pressure has fallen as well. So we're going to continue to watch this. But one thing I do want to point out the movement right here, instead of it being primarily westerly, now it's mainly going north westerly, and that's going to have big impacts. They're definitely going to spare parts of the Bahamas and Cuba as we go forward. So that's the best news I can share with you. A closer look here at the eye path with respect to the east coast of the United States. You can see that even though Aaron is going to maintain well offshore by hundreds of miles, even though that is going to be the case, whenever you get a major hurricane this close to the east coast of the United States, we're going to see widespread, possibly devastating impacts to some of these areas. In fact, if you look at the overall impacts that we are tracking, we're still going to see an elevated risk of impacts across the Gulf, which is well, a lot farther away from Aaron than what we are across the east coast. Before the east coast, you can see that bullseye right there around the North Carolina coastal areas where we're going to see the highest impacts. The only other areas we're going to see impacts that high will be for Bermuda and in the northern coastal areas, you can see right there of Dominican Republic and Haiti. So these are going to be the kind of impacts we are tracking across parts of North Carolina. Dangerous seas and rip currents will be possible across the entire east coast of not just the United States, but Maritime Canada as well. So this is going to be a dangerous situation here as we head throughout the rest of the week. Here's an updated look at our AccuWeather exclusive impacts that we're going to be tracking here. These are the weather alerts, I should say. We now have a tropical storm watch in effect here for the east coast of North Carolina or the coastal region there of Carolina and the southern coast there of Virginia of what we're going to be tracking and expecting here as we head throughout the next couple of days. On our AccuWeather risk impact scale here for the east coast, we're going to see a level two there across the outer banks of North Carolina and one of the areas, one of the reasons why we're elevating that risk impact scale to lives and property will be because we are forecasting widespread 40 to 60 mile an hour winds here across mainly the North Carolina coast with our AccuWeather local storm max. Yes, someone's going to see a 60 mile an hour straight line wind gusts, so damaging winds will be possible, especially there along the outer banks. But the primary issue we're tracking across the outer banks will be the storm surge. You can see there for parts of the outer banks, we're going to see anywhere between three to six feet of storm surge. That is going to be dangerous here with some of those areas. The elevation is under six feet, so a lot of these areas are going to be underwater here as Aaron makes this track to the north. So because of that, dangerous surf, dangerous rip currents will be possible across the Virginia and the North Carolina coastal areas here as we go forward. So this is going to be an ongoing developing, possibly dangerous situation here that we'll continue to track. The main timeline will be Wednesday and Thursday.
