Hurricane Erin remains a major hurricane as it passes just to the north of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The storm is expected to maintain its intensity and possibly strengthen during the next day or two. As the storm passes east of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic, we could see impacts.

Hurricane Erin is currently classified as a Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds reaching 125 miles per hour and a central pressure of 940 millibars. The hurricane is moving west-northwest at approximately 14 miles per hour and is described as a large system that is not significantly affected by current wind shear.

Meteorologists note that Erin is surrounded by moist air and is expected to encounter warmer sea surface temperatures, which could allow it to strengthen to Category 4. However, forecasts indicate that the storm will likely weaken as it parallels the East Coast and passes west of Bermuda, potentially downgrading to Category 2.

So here's the very latest from the Hurricane Center, just got an update as of 8 a.m., 125 mile-per-hour winds. Still a Category 3, pressure 940 millibars, and it's moving at a fairly good clip for a tropical system, west-northwest, at about 14 miles per hour. Look at the wind shear. Yes, there's some, but it's a huge system, so really not too bothered by it. And we've got some moist air that's directly around it, and eventually it will kind of traverse to the north and encounter some of these warmer sea surface temperatures in the mid-80s, and that's why we still have that chance for it going back to Category 4 status before weakening again as it kind of parallels the East Coast and goes west of Bermuda as perhaps a Category 2 at that time on Thursday.
