We are in one of the poorest districts in Tripoli, where buildings have repeatedly collapsed in recent years. Warning signs are everywhere. The damage to aging infrastructure is visible. So too is the unregulated or poor construction. The cracks started to deepen a day before the building collapsed. Many more buildings are at risk. Local authorities have told families in 105 buildings at risk of imminent collapse to leave immediately. They have identified 600 more that are unsafe. But people here say they have nowhere to go. Poverty is rampant. Khaled shows us how they are using wood instead of steel to support their homes because they can't afford maintenance work. My uncles and brothers live here, Khaled tells us. If it collapses, their neighbors can also get hurt. It's a story we heard time and time again. People, including children, have been killed. Hesam says he doesn't know what to do. He had to evacuate his home after a nearby building collapsed, weakening the already unstable structure of his own house. Cracks like these appeared on many buildings following the powerful earthquake that struck southern Turkey in 2023. The tremor was felt across Lebanon. Many people say authorities are failing them. I tell the Lebanese people, live in dignity. Don't support politicians who deprive us of everything. Many blame years of bad governance for widespread illegal construction that compromised on safety. We need money from the government, but there is the issue of unclear property ownership, while some owners don't have the money to repair or tenants pay low rents due to outdated laws.
