A fisherman has had an early morning encounter with a pod of humpback whales who put on a show right next to his boat. As the giant mammals migrate south, they've been spotted all over the east coast delighting crowds.

A fisherman off Brunswick Heads in New South Wales had a remarkable experience when a group of humpback whales swam close to his boat. The whales, part of the annual migration along Australia's east coast, created turbulence in the water and provided a memorable sight for those on the water.

Such close encounters are described as spectacular and are a somewhat regular occurrence during the migration season. The whales' playful behavior and frequent appearances make the region a notable location for observing these marine mammals.

Charging through the water, a bold humpback whale gives a fisherman a morning to remember. As the animals swam by his boat off Brunswick Heads, James Bowden held his breath and hoped it wouldn't tip too far. Normally they dive down underneath the boat but these ones are just staying on top of the water. And that trio was quickly followed by another. I could feel the force from the tail, actually just the turbulence in the water moved the boat a bit. The East Coast, a whales playground as the mammals migrate south. And plenty of other whales jumping out of the water. Just all morning it was the whale highway really. One that stretches up to the Gold Coast where some of the best tricks have been on show. These close encounters are spectacular and a somewhat regular experience for those out on the water at this time of year.
