Polish musicians Swada and Niczos are merging traditional Slavic music with modern electronic elements to create a unique sound. Drawing on 'white singing', a vocal technique from the Podlasie region, they demonstrate that folk traditions can evolve and remain relevant in contemporary music scenes.

The duo's work highlights the continued use of regional languages and customs, particularly in rural communities. Their performances attract audiences of all ages, reflecting the cultural and generational diversity of their borderland origins while giving new life to Slavic musical heritage.

How Swada is reinventing traditional Slavic music

Polish duo Swara and Nichos are bringing a new beat to traditional Slavic music. Using white singing, a traditional vocal technique from the Podlasie region in eastern Poland, they aim to show that tradition does not have to be left in the past and that it can evolve into the modern day. We recorded a music video on a beautiful Podlasie meadow, I remember the sunrise, and then we liked it so much that we started to explore this topic further, i.e. music from all over the world, which Swara explores here, and Podlasie singing, a settlement in our local culture. When I was still a very young girl, I was already learning white singing, folk singing. With Nicho we also met in a folk band, so this type of singing is not strange to me, I always liked it very much, it is a beautiful bringing of tradition and culture. This traditional singing has such magic in it, that it is very strong and very hard, you can even say that it is such a cry, it is very melodic and so plastic, that you can tell a lot about it. On the other hand, I feel that I can distance myself by singing not in the language that is my first, but the one that I learned over the years. I think that everyone speaks this language in our village. At home, in the city, in Bielsko, maybe not so much, but in the village, all the grannies, Agde, Agdeona, Skul, Czyja ty? Exactly, it was used, and it is still used. As it turns out, they like to dance to the bass, and people who are already so advanced in years, but also such that they bring their children, and these children also dance. Swara and Nicho reach for the musical roots of the past and give them a contemporary form. They reflect the very borderlands they come from, geographical, cultural, and generational.
