They may of course have very different positions about what exactly that means, but in general it's been considered a key part of American foreign policy. Though Clinton was so taken aback by Netanyahu's attitude, he was moved to profanity to describe him to aides. His most contentious relationship? With Barack Obama, famously lecturing a clearly angered US president who wanted movement on a two-state solution. I think it's time to tell the Palestinians forthrightly it's not going to happen. He is not willing, he does not recognize the Palestinians as the people deserving of the state. He believes that Israel is the representative of all the Jewish people, even though American Jews and many Jews in many other countries would appear to disagree. Netanyahu has often been accused by opponents of damaging Israel's relationship with the United States, but while he may frustrate and anger US presidents, he rarely fails to get what he wants. He'd known Biden for years and though Netanyahu welcomed him to Israel after the October 7th attacks, he refused to consider American demands for a limited war on Gaza. Biden sort of said the right things in terms of stopping the starvation, stopping the bombing of civilians in Gaza, but you know, was not willing to really exert pressure by conditioning the US military aid or arms sales because he feared the consequences on the right. A right-wing bloc of pro-Israeli conservatives and evangelical Christians, a voting bloc few presidents will ignore, far less offend, but perhaps not a concern for Donald Trump. Trump can squeeze the Israeli government without suffering political consequences because there's nobody to the right to whom the Israeli government can turn. They are stuck with him. Trump has already expressed his frustration with Netanyahu in graphic terms. They don't know what the f*** they're doing.
