He spent five and a half years in a prison camp before being released and returned. Their family reunion in 1973 is seen here in this iconic Pulitzer Prize winning photo. In the center there that's Lori levitated. There's no walking this is running this is. She struggled for the right word but settled on a good one. It's instinct inside. Instinct. These reactions cut to the core of our humanity. We saw it this week on both sides of the border. We've seen the same in other wars, at other times, throughout history. No matter what the cause people fight for or what language they squeal their delight. These reunions show the craving for love and family is universal. After something like that do you ever go back to taking your loved one for granted? Never. I'll never forget the day that he came home and every time that I see him is the same joy that he is home with us. The same joy these people now carry. That blessing of a second chance.
