E-bike and electric scooter injuries are on the rise, especially among teens, and local emergency rooms are seeing the effects. Jordan Bowen reports.

Hospitals in Brandon, Florida, have observed a notable increase in injuries related to e-bikes and electric scooters, with emergency rooms treating several cases each week. Many of these injuries, including serious head and neck trauma, are occurring among young teens, and medical professionals stress that helmet use could significantly reduce the severity of these incidents.

A local ER doctor reports that the number of e-bike injuries has risen alongside the growing popularity of these vehicles. A recent study by the National Institute of Health found that e-bike accidents are more likely to result in hospitalization and serious injuries compared to traditional bicycles. Florida law requires e-bike riders to be at least 16 years old but does not mandate helmet use, prompting renewed calls for safety precautions.

Hospitals notice rise in e-bike injuries

First at 10, you have probably seen them whizzing by on the street. We're talking about those e-bikes and electric scooters. They have soared in popularity. One emergency room in Brandon reports seeing an influx of injuries related to these e-bikes and in some cases, we're talking serious head injuries and neck injuries, especially among young teens. FOX 13's Jordan Bowen spoke with an ER doctor in Jordan. Just how often is he seeing patients with these e-bike injuries? Well, Herald Gomez with HCA Florida Hospital says at least two or three times per week he is treating patients in the ER injured on e-bikes or electric scooters. Many times he says these injuries could be much less severe had these riders been wearing a helmet. It's one of the latest modes of transportation that skyrocketed in popularity in recent years. According to Harvard Health, e-bike sales in the US went from 250,000 per year in 2018 to more than a million by 2022. Now in 2025, HCA Florida Brandon Hospital says they're seeing an influx of e-bike related injuries. They can have a multitude of different injuries, brain bleeds, neck fractures, bone fractures, dislocations, abdominal injuries, I mean significant chest injuries. I would say the numbers have seen a significant increase over the last few years, especially now they're more available. Dr. Harold Gomez says the numbers really picked up at the beginning of the summer. He says the specific causes for the injuries can vary. They can hit a bump on the road and they fall down. A lot of times they're using the sidewalk when they shouldn't and they can injure other people who are on their way. We're actually seeing quite a bit of those patients too. I mean the most significant injuries happen when there is a collision between an e-scooter or e-bike, a scooter and a car, which is less common but tends to be more serious or fatal. Earlier this month, 14-year-old Maddox Moore of Polk County was riding his e-bike on Florida's East Coast when he was struck and killed by a vehicle. His mom says her son wasn't speeding and also wasn't wearing a helmet. He underwent two brain surgeries and was in the pediatric ICU for two weeks before he died from his injuries. I don't want his loss to be for nothing. I hope that somebody somewhere out there will see this and they'll think twice maybe before buying that e-bike. According to a recent study by the National Institute of Health, e-bike accidents were more likely to result in hospitalization, internal injury and concussion compared to pedal bicycle accidents. Always always wear a helmet and then also avoid riding on the sidewalk. And here in Florida, state law does require e-bike riders to be at least 16 years old but does not require them to have a license. There's less restrictions for e-scooters. Once again, Dr. Gomez says no matter what, before you get on an e-bike or an e-scooter, make sure to always wear a helmet.
