Australia's oldest operating railway station is undergoing a massive restoration. The refurbishment will be an opportunity for South Australians to travel back-in-time ahead of the building's 170th birthday.

A $1.4 million restoration project has commenced at Arbiton Station, recognized as Australia's oldest surviving station building at an operational railway station. Built in 1856, the station has been vacant for five years and suffered significant damage from termites and water. 

The building, which has held state heritage status for 44 years, will undergo extensive repairs including new floors, windows, and façade restoration. The project aims to complete the upgrades in time for the station's 170th anniversary, with historians monitoring the process closely to ensure historical integrity.

Arbiton Station laid its bricks and mortar in 1856, making it Australia's oldest surviving station building at an operational railway station. A glossy new plan's been revealed, hoping to restore it to its former glory. It's going to be 170 years old next year, and in time for that 170th birthday, we are going to upgrade inside and out. When the bricks of the modest Arbiton Station were first laid, Flinders Street Station in Melbourne was nothing more than weatherboard sheds, the structure we know today opening in 1909. Flinders might well claim to be the oldest railway station. What we have is the oldest railway station building. Back in Adelaide, Arbiton Station has a long way to go before it's habitable, having sat empty for five years. White ants had torn it to pieces, there was water damage, there was a whole series of things that were unsafe. The building's been a state heritage place for 44 years. Works have now begun to install new floors and windows and restore the façade, ensuring the building will be preserved for future generations. Historians will be keeping a keen eye on the restoration, due to be completed by mid-2026. I always reserve judgment.
