Wildlife rescuers and local residents have responded to a surge in calls for help, as these birds can only take flight from water and cannot survive on land without assistance.

Community members, including families and children, have been actively involved in rescuing the birds and returning them to the ocean. Experts note that while Dove Keys are resilient, the increasing frequency of severe weather events, likely linked to climate change, poses a significant threat to their survival.

They will die there's no chance they can get back to the ocean without our help. It's not unusual for the tiny seabirds to get lost on land but Goss says this winter has been stormier. High winds are forcing thousands of the seafaring birds inland where they cannot leave because these birds can only take flight on water. It's just because of the back-to-back storms that we're having these gale force winds that are blowing them inland and they're exhausted. When you see a Dove Key it needs help they can't get off land they can't get into the air they need to get back to the ocean. Stranded birds confuse roadways with ice leads openings in the ocean where they thrive but in a leap of faith they're met with chaos. They're seeing this black crack in the ice is what they believe so when they come down and they're met with pavement and cars and traffic they just don't stand a chance. That's exactly where this Nick's family found and rescued a Dove Key. Yes we did. Like other people in the province they've been bringing the lost birds back to the water. So we found the bird on the driveway. Six-year-old Brooke Hayden and her family weren't going to let this little seabird die. After calling wildlife they left their home in Grand Falls and headed for the ocean with Oreo. It was black and white so I named it Oreo. You should put them back to the ocean and let them fly and you should bring them back to the wildlife before it's too late. These are still living feeling creatures and they suffer and to have people stopping and going out of their way to bring these guys to the ocean or to us I think it's wonderful. I think it says a lot about humanity. These cute little seabirds are tough. This is their natural environment but experts agree changes under climate change including stronger winds takes them away from here and is one of the primary threats to the tiny bird.
