A man has been charged after allegedly stabbing another man and threatening others, at a park in Hebershan, Sydney's west. The victim was taken to Nepean Hospital in a stable condition.

This happened during a soccer match, with numerous witnesses including children playing in the vicinity. The assailant reportedly used a box cutter to inflict a significant wound on one male's neck. This disturbing event coincides with discussions on knife laws in New South Wales, spotlighting the advocacy for "Jack's Law."

"Jack's Law" is named after Jack Beasley, a victim of a fatal stabbing in 2019 on the Gold Coast. Belinda and Brett Beasley, Jack's parents from Queensland, have been urging New South Wales officials, including the Police Minister and the Attorney General, to enhance police powers. Their proposed measures include implementing new search powers that allow police to use metal detectors for random searches in night-time areas and on public transport. This law aims to reduce the prevalence of knives on the streets, with the rationale that those not carrying weapons should not be concerned.

Despite long-term trends showing a decrease in assaults and robberies involving knives, a recent escalation in knife-related violence, notably the Bondi incident resulting in six fatalities, has reinforced the government's resolve to address this issue. The proposed changes under "Jack's Law" have garnered support from the opposition, with commitments to expand its application beyond Queensland and across Australia. The Beasleys continue to advocate for this cause in memory of their son Jack, with a determination to see changes in legislation that could prevent future tragedies.

But a recent surge in particular, the Bondi knife frenzy which killed six, has sparked a new determination from government. Taking every lever that we have to really do something serious. The Beasleys have already won support from the Opposition. We want to see Jack's Law rolled out in New South Wales and indeed go further than Queensland. And we will continue to fight so it is in all public places throughout Australia. The last time I seen Jack, he was lying lifeless on a table and I made him a promise to try and change the laws and make this happen and keep his name alive and that's what I'm doing.
