Indian security forces stated they opened fire in self-defence against what they described as an unruly mob, but relatives of the victims insist the protest was peaceful and are calling for an investigation.

The unrest follows ongoing discontent over the Indian government's 2019 decision to revoke the region's semi-autonomous status and statehood, dividing it into two territories. Authorities have since restricted movement and banned public gatherings in the regional capital and surrounding areas. Protest organisers warn that continued government inaction could lead to further violence, while the government accuses activists of inciting unrest.

Hundreds of thousands of security personnel have been deployed in Ladakh, which used to be part of the disputed Kashmir region. In 2019, India's right-wing BJP government stripped the semi-autonomous constitutional status and statehood of Indian-administered Kashmir. The government, led by Narendra Modi, then carved up the former state into two territories – Jammu and Kashmir with a local legislature and Ladakh without one – an action people in the territory are continuing to protest against. They accused the Modi government of delaying attempts to resolve the dispute for the last six years. After police killed and wounded protesters on Wednesday, they say peace is not working. The government has since restricted the movement of residents and imposed a ban on public gatherings in the regional capital Leh and surrounding areas. Sonam Manchuk went on a hunger strike on our behalf. His health began to deteriorate and people were compelled to take to the streets. The police responded with violence and four people lost their lives. Now, we are observing a complete shutdown. Protest organisers have been warning sentiment among youth could turn violent if the government continues to refuse their demands. The government accuses activists of misleading people through provocatively talking of Arab Spring-style protests and references to Gen-Z demonstrations in Nepal. Kashmir is disputed between India, Pakistan and China. India claims all of it, while Pakistan claims everything except the part held by China. UN resolutions have called for the people of the region to decide their own future in a free and impartial plebiscite.
