The hurricane, described as one of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded, caused the Ladigue River to rise overnight, destroying homes and property. Official reports confirm at least 43 fatalities in Haiti, with more than a dozen individuals still missing.

I worked hard and sent two children to finish school and learn a trade, and now they have passed away. It's usually not a mother who buries her children. It's the children who bury their mother. Look at the crying. Look at the scene. Many residents were asleep when the Ladigue River began rising after midnight, swallowing homes and property. Hurricane Melissa killed at least 43 people in Haiti, and more than a dozen others remain missing.
