AccuWeather's lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva was live on the AccuWeather Network to discuss the latest in the tropics on July 21.

Meteorologists are closely watching a weather disturbance near the Gulf Coast, which is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to the region. The system, located off the tail end of a front, is moving south and west and may produce impacts similar to a recent tropical rainstorm. Although the disturbance is close to land and has a low chance of developing into a named tropical storm, experts advise monitoring for any changes.

Additionally, a healthy-looking tropical wave is moving across the Atlantic, but it is expected to weaken due to dry air and wind shear before reaching the Caribbean. This system is not anticipated to pose a threat to the United States. The main focus remains on the Gulf Coast, where increased moisture could lead to showers, downpours, and gusty winds in the coming days.

Gulf Coast moisture builds midweek

Well, hey, we want to talk to AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva. And Alex, we are dealing with, again, that time of the year where we really need to keep a close eye on things because we often see storms develop, sometimes on relatively short timescales. So how are things looking right now? Yeah, especially close to the United States. Again, this is the time of the year that we're really looking close to the United States. You talk about homegrown development. You hear us talking about it a lot. A lot of times in June and July, we're looking closer to the US, an old front stalling down, and then getting a little bit of spin on the end of it. That's usually where we're looking. But we also have an area way out east of the islands. Not too, too concerned about that area. But we'll start with the area that's closer to home here. This is the area that could bring some rain here to the Gulf Coast states over the next couple of days. It's off the tail end of a front. And it will be moving generally to the south and to the west. Very similar track to what we saw with the tropical rainstorm a couple of days ago, bringing a pretty good swath of some showers and some thunderstorms to the northern Gulf Coast here. It's been kind of interesting, Alex. I know it's pretty disembodied and it's difficult to track. But some of the moisture in the Midwest right now could be traced back to, if we look at its DNA, it came from that tropical rainstorm from last week. And it's going to be kind of shunted southeast to the Carolinas, almost completing the circuit and meeting some really abundant moisture in place already there right now. Yeah, it's pretty cool. It went all the way around that area of high pressure that you see on your screen there. And then it's coming around the other side. So it's like a total cycle here. And again, we're going to have to watch to see if this can develop any tropical characteristics. The tropical rainstorm ended up being a little too close to land to really develop into a named storm. This one might be much of the same, where it's too close to land to really develop. But we're going to be watching it just in case it slides a little further off the coast. There is that chance. The waters are very warm. It can have the potential to develop. And look at that footage there from just a few days ago there in Louisiana from Aaron Rigsby. Doesn't take much. Doesn't have to be a named storm to cause big impacts. And then one of the healthiest looking tropical waves so far this season is on the map as well. But this is not a major headline for us at this moment. And why is that the case? Well, one, it's still early in the season. Now, we see these tropical waves coming across the Atlantic, sometimes even starting in late May, but usually early in the tropical season. A lot of dust, a lot of dry air. And that's what we've seen so far this year. This one is one of the healthier looking ones that have come off of Africa and is coming across the Atlantic, but it's still battling some dry air. And it's in a pocket right now where there's some low shear. But I think by Wednesday, by the time it's really approaching the islands, you can see that purple area in the Eastern Caribbean. It's really going to run into that like a wall of shear. And I think it's going to really get torn apart. So it's got a window here, 36 to 48 hours to try to develop. I think it's a low chance, but after that, I think it gets sheared apart. And we also have some dry air in advance of this system and it's not too far removed from it really. And some of this air could be traced back to North Africa. Yeah, indeed it can. And tropical systems, they like moist environments. And when we're talking about dry air and dust, tropical systems do not like that. And it really hinders their development. So that combined with the increasing wind shear in a couple of days is why we're pretty confident in saying that this is not going to pose a threat to the United States. So our eyes drawn back to that first disturbance you discussed here between Tuesday and Friday, perhaps into Saturday, some tropical showers of rain, downpours, and also some wind could be impacts for the Central Gulf Coast and in the short term, South Carolina as well.
