Less than a week after Guinea’s controversial constitutional referendum, the country’s prime minister says fresh presidential and legislative elections will be held this year.

Guinea's prime minister has stated that new presidential and legislative elections will be held within the year, following a constitutional referendum. Official results show that over 89% of voters supported the new constitution, with a turnout exceeding 86%. 

The new constitution permits current leader Mahmoudi Doumbouya to run for president and extends the presidential term from five to seven years, renewable twice. It also establishes a senate, with a third of its members appointed by the president. Opposition leaders have alleged fraud, including claims of pre-marked ballots and voter suppression, and have questioned the validity of the results.

It also extends the presidential term from five to seven years, renewable twice, and creates a senate with a third of its members appointed by the president. Opposition leaders are calling foul, alleging fraud, pre-marked ballots and voter suppression. One leader claims the results were prepared in advance.
