Growing push to make day after Super Bowl a national holiday

A good chance you plan to tune in to the Super Bowl on Sunday. I know I'll be watching and rooting for my hometown team, but what does this have to do with politics? Well, thousands of people want to see the Monday after the Super Bowl become a holiday, and that would take action from Congress. Over 100 million people are expected to watch Sunday's game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. And then on Monday, an estimated 16.1 million people plan to skip work. That's according to research by a human resources firm. Online petitions pop up every year, asking Congress, the president, or the NFL to make the Monday after the Super Bowl a holiday. This year, one sponsored by the ice cream maker Drumstick has support for more than 5,000 people. A 2017 petition sponsored by Heinz, the ketchup maker, got over 70,000 signatures. The effort to give football fans a recovery day has seen some movement at the state level. Last year, two Tennessee lawmakers proposed a bill that would replace the state's Columbus Day holiday with a new one for the Monday after the Super Bowl. While Congress is known to pass resolutions congratulating the Super Bowl winning team. Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs and all of Chiefs' kingdom. Efforts to make the Monday after a holiday aren't on the docket just yet. The newest federal holiday approved by Congress is Juneteenth. It was created in 2021, and it took decades of advocacy to make it happen.
