Victorian High Country killer Greg Lynn has been jailed for 32 years for the murder of camper Carol Clay. The former pilot showed no emotion as his fate was sealed during a sentencing hearing that brought the judge to tears.

Greg Lynn has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for the murder of Carol Clay, which took place in Victoria's High Country over four years ago. The jury found Lynn guilty of murdering Clay in a violent and brutal manner but did not convict him of the murder of Russell Hill, who was also involved in the incident. Despite the defense's argument that the confrontation was accidental, Lynn admitted to covering up the deaths by disposing of and later burning the couple's remains.

Justice Michael Croucher delivered the sentence, which includes a non-parole period of 24 years. He expressed uncertainty about Lynn's motive and noted that the jury's findings differed from both the defense's and prosecution's theories. Justice Croucher acknowledged the profound impact the crime had on the victims' families, whom he noted are suffering deeply due to the circumstances.

The court highlighted the serious nature of the crime, emphasizing Lynn's deliberate actions in attempting to conceal the evidence. Lynn has maintained his innocence and plans to appeal the conviction. Having already spent three years incarcerated, he may be eligible for release in 21 years, when he will be 79 years old.



Greg Lynn sentenced to 32 years prison for murder

Greg Lynn was loaded into a prison van to begin his sentence for murdering Carol Clay in Victoria's High Country four and a half years ago. It was a violent, brutal, horrific death inflicted with a weapon designed to kill. During a five-week trial in June, the prosecution told the jury Lynn killed Russell Hill in an argument at a campsite over a drone and then shot Mrs Clay in the head to remove her as a witness. But Lynn's defence lawyer argued the entire confrontation was an accident. The jury found him not guilty of murdering Russell Hill, but guilty of murdering Mrs Clay. While sentencing Lynn today, Justice Michael Croucher revealed he was unable to figure out what Lynn's motive may have been. It sort of seemed like the jury found something that neither the defence nor the prosecution was putting as what happened in the fateful moments. Lynn has always maintained his innocence, claiming the couple died during separate struggles. But he admitted to meticulously covering up their deaths by destroying campsite evidence, dumping the couple's bodies in remote bushland hours away, and returning eight months later to burn their remains. It is a grave crime to extinguish life of another violently, deliberately, intentionally. It is made all the worse by Mr Lynn's post-offence conduct. Mr Lynn must have known that these actions would cause Mrs Clay's loved ones no end of grief. Justice Michael Croucher sentenced the 58-year-old to 32 years in prison with a non-parole period of 24 years. As grave as the murder of Mrs Clay was, this is not, in my judgement, a case calling for a life sentence. Justice Michael Croucher became visibly emotional and wiped away tears as he acknowledged the grief and pain endured by the loved ones of both Russell Hill and Carol Clay. He also recognised that Lynn's acquittal of the murder of Mr Hill has left the 74-year-old's family in an excruciating legal limbo. As one person to another, as a matter of common human decency, I should acknowledge their plight, their agony, their suffering, and I do. Lynn has already spent three years behind bars, meaning he may walk free in 21 years. By that time, he will be 79 years old. Now we have 28 days to lodge the appeal and we're instructed to lodge that appeal against conviction, so we'll just have to see how that goes.
