Greece remains on high wildfire alert amid an ongoing heatwave. A large fire south of Athens forced evacuations near the Temple of Poseidon, damaging homes and spreading smoke.

Greece is enduring a significant heatwave, with temperatures peaking at 41 degrees Celsius for over ten days. The extreme heat, combined with strong winds and a lack of rainfall, has created hazardous conditions, resulting in over 1,000 wildfires in recent days. 

Authorities have issued high alerts, particularly after a large fire near Athens prompted evacuations and damaged homes. The government continues to urge residents to exercise caution and avoid actions that could spark additional fires, as firefighters work to contain the blazes across the country.

Greece hit by heatwave and wildfires

The heat wave has been raging here in Greece for more than 10 days, with temperature reaching the peak of 41 degrees Celsius, which is quite high. Of course, every year it's quite the same temperature, and the Greek are familiar with the precaution like staying hydrated or staying in the shade. But this year, it seems very difficult to bear. That's why many Athenians are reaching the small ports, like the ports of Piraeus or the beaches of Athens. However, those places have been much expensive the last month. That's why many of them prefer going to the Greek islands. And last weekend, we had many departures for the Greek islands. And since the schools are closed, of course, they are extended to vacations. For those who are staying in Athens, air-conditioning or air-conditioned spaces, places put in by the city, are the to-go place and to-go solution. And of course, the real danger now, it's more than the heat, it's the wild winds. You can hear those winds right now, those huge winds, violent winds, the last days. And authorities are in a high alert right now because of the winds, because we have to know and to consider that we didn't have rain this winter in Greece. So the cocktail with this situation, the winds and the heat, it's explosive for wildfires. We had more than 1,000 wildfires the last 48 hours, with one near Athens and also one in the north of Greece, Kavala, and of course, many, many small wildfires. So the firemen are under alert and the government is speaking every day on TV or in the media, trying to convince the Greek people to be very sensitive of this situation and to don't provoke any wildfire, which could be a catastrophe, another catastrophe for Greece, as they knew in the recent past.

It was not clear if Hamas’ statement meant it had accepted the proposal from US President Donald Trump for a 60-day ceasefire.
