Greek authorities are facing a significant increase in undocumented migrants arriving from Libya, primarily to the island of Gavdos near Crete. Most of these migrants come from Sudan, Egypt, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, with the majority being young men. In response, the government has suspended asylum rights for arrivals from Libya and introduced a new law allowing for the detention of undocumented migrants for up to five years if they do not qualify for asylum. 

These measures aim to deter new arrivals and encourage rejected applicants to leave, but they also require the expansion of detention facilities. The policies have sparked debate, as Greece's economy faces a shortage of workers, particularly in the hotel and agricultural sectors. Some locals question whether the restrictive approach will address the underlying economic needs or effectively manage migration.

A scene that has become commonplace on Gavdos this year. Dinghies and boats full of undocumented migrants arriving from Libya. Most come from Sudan and Egypt, Pakistan and Bangladesh. This tiny island off the coast of Crete has become part of a new migration route to Europe. Of the 30,000 asylum seekers Greece has received this year, more than half have arrived this way. Signs of their perilous journey litter the island. Slipshod boats built for a one-way journey. Some locals are becoming alarmed. The captain of the local ferry has transported many refugees. Almost all of them are men, including young men, 16 to 35. There are very few women, maybe three or four in 500, and a few children. Locals see these migrants and they are worried about their own future because there are so many of them. People wonder what will they do because they end up staying in Greece. That's something the government is trying to change. It suspended asylum rights for arrivals from Libya in July. But these images suggest the suspension isn't deterring everyone. This month the government also passed Europe's strictest deportation law to date. Undocumented migrants who don't qualify for asylum can now be jailed for up to five years. The goal is to put pressure on them to leave because most rejected applicants end up staying. But that means more detention camps will be needed to hold thousands of people. Two years ago the government was emphasizing the need for more workers for the economy. The government has given way to pressure to show it can control migration. Some people wonder whether these restrictive policies will work. Like this restaurateur from Crete. We need workers. The hotel sector alone is 80,000 workers short. The lads I saw were in their 20s and 30s. They'd be fine. We also have olives to pick, peaches and apples. Why shouldn't they be suitable? Life barely clings to the soil of Gavdus, but it is the soil where many are increasingly seeking a new life. The question is whether Europe is still open to integrating these newcomers.
