The primary point of contention remains the extension of healthcare subsidies, which Democrats are demanding.

Despite the ongoing shutdown, President Trump's job approval rating has increased slightly, according to a recent poll. Meanwhile, a House-passed funding measure failed to advance in the Senate for the eleventh time. Additionally, President Trump's nominee to lead the special counsel's office, Paul Ingracio, is facing opposition from some Senate Republicans following reports of racist text messages.

GOP senators meet with Trump on Day 21 of government shutdown

Capitol Hill remains at a standstill today, 21 days into the government shutdown with no sign of compromise between Democrats and Republicans. The Senate failed to advance a House-passed measure to fund the government for the 11th time yesterday. The parties remain in a standoff over Democrats' demands to extend healthcare subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of the year. This is now the second longest full government shutdown in U.S. history. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans joined President Trump for lunch at the White House today. The president expressed support for GOP lawmakers' strong stance against negotiating with Democrats until they agreed to pass the funding bill and reopen the government. They're going to lose Medicaid, they're going to lose Social Security, they're going to lose Medicare. All of those things are going to be gone because the whole country would be bankrupt and you're not going to have any kind of medical insurance. So with us, it's the opposite. And it's a great bill, we don't need any more. And I want to just say from the beginning, our message has been very simple. We will not be extorted on this crazy plot of theirs. In spite of the shutdown, a new poll by Reuters shows President Trump's job approval rating has ticked up two points over the past few weeks to 42%. Let's go now to CBS News White House reporter, Aaron Navarro. Aaron, good to see you. What do we know about today's lunch at the White House? On the surface, this was an opportunity for the president to host Republican senators on the newly renovated Rose Garden patio. He began his speech by mentioning the renovations there, as well as his construction of the White House ballroom, which has resulted in some demolition of the East Wing behind me now. But overall, this was an opportunity for President Trump and Senate Republicans to provide a unified front as we go into day 21 of this government shutdown. As you heard, the president said, we will not be extorted on this crazy plot of theirs, referring to Senate Democrats. And at one point, he referenced his administration having a, quote, Darth Vader, and had White House Budget Director Russ Vought stand up, which got some applause from the Republican senators there. The one Republican senator who was not in attendance is Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who President Trump noted has been at odds with this administration's priorities, whether it comes to the One Big Beautiful bill or Paul's questioning of the strikes of alleged drug carriers coming from the coast of Venezuela. President Trump said he would have allowed Paul to attend, quote, begrudgingly, if the senator wanted to come. Where do negotiations stand now in the government shutdown? Yeah, based off the president's remarks, it seems like there's not much movement, definitely from the Republican side. You heard some of the comments from President Trump saying that they won't be extorted. He also said at one point, quote, Democrats are opposing that short-term funding bill in a, quote, craven and pointless act of partisan spite. And quick remarks that he gave after the president and Senate Majority Leader John Thune added that Republicans will remain, quote, unified on this shutdown. So yesterday, there was that 11th time for the Senate to pass the House short-term funding bill, but that failed. President Trump's controversial nominee to lead the special counsel's office is not getting a lot of support from Republican leadership. What can you tell us? Yeah, this is Paul Ingracio, who, after a recent political report of pretty racist text messages he allegedly said to a group chat, you're seeing some Senate Republicans say that they don't think he will pass. Ingracio has a confirmation hearing this Thursday with the Senate Homeland Security Committee, and one of the senators on that panel, Florida Senator Rick Scott, has already told reporters that he will not support him. The chair of that committee, Senator Rand Paul, has said that the White House has to, quote, make the determination on whether they think that the nomination can actually go through.
