Global demand for coal causing havoc in South Africa

I'm on the M4 highway connecting South Africa with neighboring Mozambique. About 150 miles that way is South Africa's coal mining country, and about 100 miles that way is the port of Maputo. In between the two, a ridiculous amount of trucks. For 24 hours we are not sleeping. We are on the road with no toilets. After Vladimir Putin's army invaded Ukraine last year, prices for coal surged to new records as Europe scrambled to find alternative energy sources. South African suppliers of the fuel helped fill the gap. Between September and January, the country had replaced Russia as Europe's biggest source of coal imports. By the end of the year, miners had shipped about 14 million tons of coal to buyers in Europe. At the same time, South Africa's state-owned rail company Transnet transported the lowest volumes to ports in about three decades. So, mining companies turned to trucks. It's Saturday night. This is in a total gridlock. Private cross-border transporters between South Africa and Mozambique were losing a lot of business because of criminal attacks. So, their associations stepped in to marshal the queue of trucks themselves and maintain order. So, our people were killed here. Ladies were raped because of the blockage that was caused by the trucks. Even as European demand has since subsided, record heatwaves in the number two coal consumer, India, have kept demand for South Africa's coal high. And the trucks keep rolling on.

U.S. President Joe Biden said that both freedom of speech and the rule of law must be respected in protests at college campuses over Israel's war in Gaza. In response to a reporter's question, Biden said that the campus protests had not forced him to reconsider his policies in the Middle East.
