Global calls for equality on International Women's Day

The 8th of March is a day when women all around the world bring to light the injustices they continue to face. Hundreds walked through the streets of Bangkok on Friday, demanding better working conditions and social protections for women. We are focusing on proposing a 180-day maternity leave to the government, and they should pay us full salary. Now we only have 98 days, and eight days are not paid. While in the Philippines, women demand an end to sexual harassment and wage discrimination. And in Indonesia, women and men came together to protest the decline in working conditions with more and more people, especially women, in unstable short-term contracts. In Kazakhstan, on the eve of International Women's Day, protesters denounced numerous injustices including a nationwide epidemic of gender-based violence that the UN estimates at 400 femicides per year. Women are being killed simply because they're women. We need to start from there. And in Kazakhstan, today, the gender wage gap persists and systematic discrimination on the basis of gender continues. Demonstrators were face-to-face with a pro-government rally, where some brandished anti-feminist and anti-LGBT placards. And the struggle for equality applies to girls too, as a new UNICEF report released on Friday showed that the number of girls and women alive today who have undergone female genital mutilation is higher than ever before, at 230 million worldwide.
