Police have ramped up their search for missing German backpacker Caroline Wilga who was last seen in regional Western Australia. It is believed that she may have become lost while driving after finding her car abandoned in bushland.

Authorities believe the vehicle suffered mechanical issues and that Vilga may have walked away from the scene, with no evidence at this stage to suggest foul play.

The search involves local police, aerial support, and the major crime division's missing persons unit, with forensic teams assessing the van. Vilga, who has been backpacking in Australia for two years, was last seen at a general store in Beacon. Police are urging anyone with information on her whereabouts to come forward.

German backpacker missing for nearly two weeks

Police searching for Karolina Vilga say at this stage there is no evidence to suggest foul play is involved and that she has potentially walked away from her vehicle. The German backpacker's van was found about 35km inland from any main tracks and is believed to have suffered mechanical issues. Police made the breakthrough yesterday afternoon finding the vehicle abandoned in the Karun hill area. The discovery was made about 100km from where the 26-year-old was last spotted on June 29 at a general store in Beacon. Police have spent the day searching the Karun hill area, concentrating around Karolina's vehicle. Aerial support, local police and the major crime division missing persons unit are all involved in the search effort, with a forensic contingent also making an assessment of the van. Karolina has been backpacking within Australia for the last two years, working on mine sites and staying in Perth hostels along the way. It appears that as she was driving she's likely to become lost. The terrain, it's outback country and there's large rocky outcrops. Although there's a number of tracks, you can see how it would be easy to become lost or disorientated in that area if you didn't know it well. We want to bring Karolina home and the police are doing everything they can. Many tourists come to Western Australia and they're overwhelmed by just how large the landmass is and how easily it is become lost and isolated. Anyone with any information about where Karolina may be is being urged to contact police.
