It's my duty to retrieve them from under the rubble and put them somewhere where we can honor them. Since Safadi's family died, Israeli strikes have reduced much of Gaza to a wasteland and killed nearly 68,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. Not included in that toll are several thousand bodies the health ministry believes to lie beneath the rubble. A lack of equipment, such as diggers, has made finding them difficult, according to Ibrahim Abu Arish of the civil defense. The war began on October 7th, 2023, with a Hamas attack on southern Israel. The militants killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Safadi says since the ceasefire on October 10, international attention has focused on Hamas retrieving and handing over the bodies of the dead hostages to Israel, but not the many lost Palestinians. For the international agencies and international organizations, as soon as the war ended, the first thing they did was try to get the bodies of the Israeli side. For me, aside from being Palestinian or Gazan, I am human and it is my right to get my relatives and bury them.
