At a makeshift camp in Deir el-Balah, Khaled Obeid has spent the last two months scanning every passing vehicle, holding onto a fragile hope that one of them might bring his son Ahmed back home. Ahmed left one morning to get food from the Zakim crossing area. He never returned. He went to bring aid to help me, his mother and his sister who lost her husband during this war. He hasn't returned until now. He went because he was hungry. We have nothing to eat, life has become unbearably expensive and we have no money to meet even our basic needs. Khaled reported his son's disappearance to the International Committee of the Red Cross and every official body he could reach. He says he got nothing but silence, no answers, no trace. In Rafah, the wait is just as agonising for Asma Khreis, who has not seen her husband Fadi since he left to find flour. A father of six, Fadi lives with epileptic seizures, yet he risked everything to bring back a few handfuls of food for his family. Asma does not know whether he was killed, injured or taken. We lost contact with my husband on July 24th. He went out to get some flour. For nearly three weeks we had been grinding lentils to make bread for our children. He had no choice but to go seek aid near the Morag corridor and since then we've heard nothing from him. Human rights monitors have been collecting harrowing first-hand accounts of individuals who have gone messing in Gaza, only to be found later killed by Israeli forces. In many cases, those who have gone missing are apparently killed near the aid distribution points, but due to the Israeli targeting, their bodies remained unreachable. In Gaza, a trip to collect food has become a gamble with life itself. For families like Khaled's and Asma's, it's a never-ending wait between hope and heartbreak. Many Palestinians left home with empty hands, hoping to return with a bag of flour. But many never came back. In Gaza, the line between survival and disappearance is now heartbreakingly thin.
