Garbage collection services have been suspended for months due to destroyed trucks, fuel shortages, and restricted access to key landfills controlled by the Israeli military. 

The growing waste has led to a surge in pests and foul odors, with public health officials reporting increased cases of skin and respiratory diseases. Local authorities are struggling to manage the situation due to limited resources and lack of donor support, making waste removal one of the most urgent challenges for the region.

More than two years of war have left central Gaza buried under mountains of waste. From the sky, the scale of the disaster is staggering. Piles of rubbish covering what were once bustling neighborhoods. In the heart of Gaza City, the smell of decay fills the air. With garbage collection services suspended for months, rubbish blocks roads and fills empty lots. We are suffering with the strong smell of waste everywhere. The foul odor and the growing number of insects are unbearable. New types of pests have appeared, including small cockroaches, bugs and mosquitoes. It feels like we are dying slowly in these conditions. Municipal workers say they can't keep up. Dozens of trucks were destroyed during the fighting. Fuel shortages and the lack of spare parts have crippled the cleanup operations, even during the ceasefire. The municipality is struggling with two important things. First, it does not have access to the main landfill in eastern Gaza City, as the Israeli military is controlling the area. As a result, trash is piling up across the city. Second, we don't have enough donors to assist the municipality and its operations. Public health officials warn that growing trash heaps are more than an eyesore. They are a breeding ground for diseases. Doctors are already reporting more cases. Skin diseases such as scabies and hepatitis are spreading. We have also come across cases of respiratory diseases due to burning of garbage in the streets. Gaza infrastructures, battered by war and strained by the Israeli blockade, has left local authorities with few options. Even with a fragile ceasefire in place, the pace of recovery is slow and clearing the waste has become one of the most urgent challenges.
