A haunting image of nine-year-old Mahmoud Ajjour, who lost both arms in an Israeli attack on Gaza City last year, has received a prestigious World Press Photo Award in the Netherlands.

The striking image portrays Mahmoud, a young boy who lost both arms during an Israeli attack on Gaza City. At the time of the photo, Mahmoud was suffering from chickenpox, and his mother needed to scratch him to ease the itching. For Mahmoud, initially hesitant to be seen in his condition, the ability to raise awareness and hope for prosthetic assistance drove him to allow the public to view his portrait.

The photo was selected from nearly 60,000 entries, with judges highlighting its quiet yet profound representation of war's impact on civilians. It is praised for its ability to convey the message of lost childhood dreams and futures without displaying explicit violence. The image is part of a broader collection of more than 40 award-winning photographs documenting human suffering in conflict zones such as Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar, which will be exhibited in 60 cities worldwide.

The United Nations has reported that no conflict has resulted in as many child amputees as the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Samar, who was also displaced from Gaza to Doha, lost 30 relatives and over 160 friends and colleagues due to the bombings. Her dedication to capturing moments that shed light on the grim realities faced by innocent civilians continues through her award-winning photography.



Gaza child's photo wins world press photo award

She won her dream award, but Samar Abu Uloof can't be happy. She captured this haunting image of 9-year-old Mahmoud Adjour, who was severely injured after he tried to save his family from an Israeli bombardment. The moment she took the photo, he was suffering from chicken pox and needed his mother to scratch him to soothe the itching. It's a very difficult image to watch. At first, Mahmoud did not want people to see him this way. It's very hard for a person to be without limbs. The person only realizes the value after they're gone. What encouraged him to show himself was the hope that people would see him and help him have prosthetics so he can continue his life. According to the United Nations, no war has caused as many child amputees as Israel's war on Gaza. Samar met the boy in Doha, after she was also evacuated to save her four children from Israel's bombardments, which killed 30 of her relatives and more than 160 colleagues. For the jury, it was clear that of the nearly 60,000 photos entered for this prestigious competition, the portrait of Mahmoud from Gaza stood out, showing the horrors of war and industrial destruction through a boy who saw his future taken away from him, like so many others, without showing actual violence. It's a very quiet photo. It's a photo that doesn't push you in your discomfort zone. It's a photo that invites you to come in. And I think it's that quietness and that invitation that actually is able to take you in totally and to bring you the message that it's trying to bring, which is basically, look at me. I am a boy. I am a boy who has to have a future. The conflict between Israel and Palestine has featured prominently in the 70 years since the competition was started. Since the beginning of the war, I asked myself what the image is the world needs to see so that the war would end. These are civilians in the end, people who have no guilt in anything. They shouldn't have to pay the price. Not the children, not the women, not the elderly, and not the young men.
