Artists in Gaza have lost much of their physical artwork due to the destruction of studios, galleries, and museums during ongoing conflict. Despite these losses, artists like Basil and May Murad continue to create and guide others, using art as a form of resistance and expression.

To combat the erasure of Palestinian cultural identity, the ArtZone Palestine digital platform has emerged as a vital resource. It archives and exhibits lost and marginalized Palestinian artworks, allowing artists to preserve their legacy and share their experiences with a global audience. The initiative aims to restore and reproduce destroyed works, ensuring that Palestinian art and identity endure despite adversity.

Gaza artists turn to digital archives to preserve Palestinian identity

Basil has lost nearly everything he created, yet he continues to paint, guiding children and helping them transform the burden of war into color and expression. In Gaza, studios, galleries, museums and cultural heritage have been destroyed. Basil found a lifeline in an online platform dedicated to preserving Palestinian art. I was contacted by the ArtZone platform, seeking to archive our work lost in the war. Some paintings depicted the realities of the First Intifada, the advent of the Palestinian Authority, the wars waged upon Gaza. This platform is attempting to preserve these works. Today, all these works have been lost under the rubble. Artist May Murad sees art as resistance against the systematic erasure of Palestinian identity. She left Gaza in 2018 and now lives in France. She lost all her paintings there. May says it's like losing part of her soul. But ArtZone Palestine is helping to ensure her work endures. Most of our artworks were destroyed in the war, although it is never more important than the loss of lives. My mother is using the destroyed artwork to make a fire to cook a meal that could save a human life. This is the paradox of art and life, of memory and survival, which makes me more committed to my role as an artist, to preserve our history and defy oblivion. ArtZone Palestine is more than a digital archive. It is a lifeline for artists, a space where their art and experiences can be shared with the world. The ArtZone Palestine is an independent digital platform concerned with contemporary Palestinian artworks that have been marginalized and neglected, as well as those exterminated by Zionist colonialism and occupation. At our launch, we exhibited about 1,200 artworks by Gaza's artists whose works were destroyed by the Zionist enemy. We named this exhibition DNA to allow the reproduction of these works in more than one place in the world. For Palestinian artists, the destruction of their work is not just the loss of something they've created. It's an attack on their identity. Through this initiative, they are restoring artworks, preserving their legacy, and breathing new life into what was lost.
