Queensland’s peak waste industry body is urging households to think twice before tossing the wrong items in their bins as more garbage trucks fitted with detection cameras hit the streets. Garbage trucks in Queensland, particularly on the Sunshine Coast, have been fitted with multiple cameras to monitor the contents of household bins. Drivers inspect up to 1,000 bins daily, identifying items that should not be disposed of in regular waste or recycling, such as gas bottles, electrical items, and even unusual finds like live animals.

The footage from these cameras allows waste collection companies and local councils to quickly address contamination issues and identify the source households. Industry leaders highlight that contamination increases costs for ratepayers and risks essential infrastructure. The initiative is part of a broader effort to encourage correct bin usage and support communities, especially during disaster recovery periods when waste volumes surge.

Garbage truck cameras busting bad bin behaviour

We're used to seeing them on our street on bin day, but what you might not know is your local garbage truck can see you too. There's five cameras on the truck, so front, rear and side view, and then the hoppy view. Here on the Sunshine Coast, Richard Sykes manages a team of 75 trucks and 80 drivers, responsible for collecting more than 175,000 tonnes of waste and recycling every year. We can see quite easily from the cameras what's going into the back of the truck and the drivers look at that every time they empty a bin, so up to 1,000 bins a day, they're looking at every single bin. And it's what's not supposed to be ending up in our bins that's causing industry workers to lose their lids. Gas bottles, fire extinguishers, vacuum cleaners, electrical items, probably one of the weirdest things I've seen was a live kangaroo end up in an MRF, a materials recovery facility. We're also running the risk of losing some of our essential waste and recycling infrastructure. Alison Price is CEO of the Waste Recycling Industry Association Queensland. Dealing with contamination takes time, it costs money, and in the end it costs ratepayers more. Now, thanks to these cameras and new real-time communication technology, collection companies and local councils are coming together to help bust bad bin behaviour. If anything is happening on the driver's day, he can alert us and tell us there's a contamination issue that we can tell back to our local council. We can also identify generally pretty close what house it comes from, so there's no hiding from that one. While it's hoped this new technology will help deter households from doing the wrong thing, the industry is also appealing to the public to better understand the help it provides when a community needs it most. In times of disaster, our industry is back at work before most other industries so that people and businesses can get on with doing what they do every day. We have the cyclone just recently really caused us some issues, the guys have got to work harder in very adverse conditions. Often after a disaster, communities will generate 12 months or more of waste in the space of a week. It's a huge job for our industry to collect that, get that away and dispose and recycle of it safely. So when it comes to bin night at your place this week... It's really simple, please put the right thing in the right bin.
