A Northern Irish startup is helping athletes to better understand their bodies. Its wearable device measures real-time movement data and supports intelligent and safe training.

Naomi McGregor, inspired by a preventable knee injury she suffered as a young ballet dancer, developed MoveTrue, a wearable device that tracks biomechanical metrics in real time. The device, created with CTO Dylan McBurney, sends data to an app that uses AI to analyze movements, assign scores, and generate personalized training plans for athletes. MoveTrue aims to optimize athletic performance and reduce injury risks, and has already been adopted in high-impact sports such as ice hockey and rugby.

While users like rugby player Jake Flannery praise the device for providing clear, objective feedback during injury recovery, McGregor notes that AI in sports still faces challenges, particularly for female athletes due to a lack of relevant data. The MoveTrue team plans to improve data collection to better understand and prevent sports injuries in the future.

From ballet to biomechanics

Naomi McGregor wants to spare others what she went through as a teenager. She started ballet at age four. Ten years later, she injured her knee while dancing. I was told after three years I need a specialist that I should never dance again and my injury was completely preventable. A traumatic experience that inspired innovation. A wearable that measures biomechanical metrics in real time. Users can follow their movements and performance on the field. The development began in a garage during the Covid pandemic. Over the past three years, we've been able to design, iterate and launch MoveTrue across Europe. The MoveTrue wearable sends its data to an app. The technology is meant to help many high-impact sports such as ice hockey. CTO Dylan McBurney is responsible for MoveTrue's technical evolution. What you see here, this is the Belfast Giants with the athletes skating on the surface. And the cool thing is we can zoom in to all of the data points. So this is captured in real time and we can see all of these data points by flicking through them. The app analyzes movement data and assigns scores automatically. An AI tool creates individual training plans, tailored to the athlete's strengths and weaknesses. The goal is to optimize performance and lower the risk of injury. At the point of initially kicking off MoveTrue, AI was not a term that was being used across the industry. Now, with the explosion of AI, it has allowed us to advance our product dramatically. But what do the users think? Rugby player Jake Flannery is pleased. Sometimes when you get injuries as an athlete, it's not totally clear what the issue is or what the deficiencies are when you're returning from play. So having that clear objective measurements that you can chase and improve on makes a very clear path to return to play. Naomi believes AI in sport has its limitations, especially for female athletes. There isn't enough data to train the systems effectively. Women are up to eight times more likely to suffer an ACL rupture. And with this, when we're considering AI, we need to ensure that female anatomy, hormonal health and the differences of their biomechanical performance is factored into the decision-making. MoveTrue won't always prevent disaster, but there's evidence that using one mitigates the risk of injury. In the future, Naomi and her team plan to improve data collection to better understand how injuries can happen.
