However, security was compromised when 16 submariners used smartwatches during physical workouts, sharing their routes and unintentionally revealing patrol information.

The French Navy stated that the servicemen involved have been sanctioned, and strict reminders have been issued to reinforce the importance of secrecy. Despite the breach, the Navy assured that these actions did not compromise the overall security of the Ylong operational base. Strava, the globally renowned fitness app, allows users to record and share their physical activities with its extensive community of 120 million. If privacy settings are not adjusted, such data becomes accessible publicly.

Digital footprints present ongoing challenges for military security, especially since personal lives are seldom disconnected from technology today. This incident highlights broader concerns, as similar occurrences have been noted with public figures such as Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron, and Vladimir Putin, whose movements have been tracked due to their bodyguards' use of the app.

But this security fortress was breached when 16 submariners went for a run with their smartwatches, inadvertently leaking their patrol schedules via the Strava app that mapped and shared their route. I think this is serious because those submarines are our nuclear deterrent, safeguarding the country. Some things must stay secret. The Navy has announced the servicemen involved have been sanctioned, with strict reminders issued to all personnel. Negligence on the part of some personnel does not constitute breaches that could affect the activities of the Ylong operational base. Strava is the largest sporting community worldwide, boasting 120 million users and billions of journeys recorded, visible for anyone to view online, if the privacy settings haven't been changed. Every 400 metres that I run, it saves the data in a route. If I choose to leave it public, anyone can see where I've been. In the forces, efforts are made to reduce personnel's digital footprint, but it's not always possible. Considering personal lives are now all digitised, it's become really hard, especially when you have people away from their families for weeks or months at a time. The French Navy aren't the only victims though. Le Monde found the movements of Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Putin could all be traced via their bodyguards' public usage of Strava.
