The Nigerian Football Federation has announced the death of Peter Rufai, a former national team goalkeeper widely regarded as one of Africa's finest. Rufai's career lasted 20 years, featuring club appearances in Portugal, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He played a pivotal role in Nigeria's victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and represented the country at the FIFA World Cups in 1994 and 1998. 

Rufai was instrumental in helping Nigeria reach the last 16 at the 1994 World Cup and was part of the country's so-called 'golden generation' of the 1990s. He was also the first Nigerian goalkeeper to score an international goal, achieving this feat in a 1993 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Rufai is the sixth member of Nigeria's 1994 World Cup squad to pass away.

The others are Stephen Keshi, Rashid Yekini, Wilfred Agbovanare, Thompson Oliha and Uche Okafor. They belong to what many Nigerians termed as the golden generation of the 1990s.
