Flood victims across Milwaukee County are sharing their stories of devastation as local officials work to secure federal assistance for those who have lost homes and possessions.

Senator Tammy Baldwin toured the affected neighborhoods, listening to residents and pledging to advocate for a federal disaster declaration.

Efforts to secure aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have begun, with Wisconsin's governor declaring a state of emergency. Senator Baldwin, alongside other lawmakers, is working to petition the federal government for assistance, as local communities await relief.

Tonight, Senator Tammy Baldwin spent time in Milwaukee surveying the damage, and our Mike Biermeister breaks down her visit and what neighbors are calling for. It's been a week of tremendous frustration and despair for so many in Milwaukee County and beyond. So we lost everything. It's kind of sad right now. We're still so traumatized. It's been very stressful trying to understand what the next step is. That's just a snippet of the people that we've spoken with dealing with the aftermath of this destructive flooding, and some of the people that I've spoken with have told me that their insurance claims have already been denied or insurance won't cover the damages. Just hoping that FEMA can get involved. So now, they're counting on the government to step in. It's just not me. It's all my neighbors, my friends that live around here. We all need the help that we can, and hopefully the government can at least help us all out. That's why Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin spent time in Milwaukee Friday evening to survey the damage and understand the impact. I am here to hear and listen and bring that back to Washington to persuade this administration to do what they need to do, which is declare a major disaster in southeastern Wisconsin. The first steps have already been taken to try and secure aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, with Governor Tony Evers declaring a state of emergency. Now Senator Baldwin has teamed up with Congressman Brian Stile and Congresswoman Gwen Moore to petition for federal aid. We'll be working to try to make sure we hold this administration to account, and we hold FEMA to account to do its job here. Which is why elected leaders are trying to make the best case for southeastern Wisconsin. Many just hoping relief will come as soon as possible.
