The next storm system will bring the chance for heavy rain and a few severe storms to the Southern Plains mid to late week. A few severe storms could produce large hail from Dallas and Fort Worth back toward Abilene and San Angelo Wednesday night into Thursday. Heavy rain is forecast to spread from Wichita Falls to Dallas, Abilene, and down to Del Rio, lowering temperatures that have recently reached record highs in Texas. While the rainfall is expected to provide relief from ongoing drought and heat, it also raises the risk of flash flooding, particularly where dry soil may lead to increased runoff.

Weather models indicate varying rain totals, with the European model predicting 3 to 5 inches in parts of Kansas and Missouri, and the American model forecasting significant rain for areas including San Angelo, San Antonio, and Waco. The threat of flash flooding will be monitored in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas through Thursday, with the affected area expanding into Friday morning.

anywhere from Wichita Falls to Dallas. Abilene all the way down to Del Rio, and we're going to continue to see the rain spread across the area. That's also going to take our temperatures down Dallas tighter record yesterday of 87 degrees, so it's been extremely hot. We've been close to 90 for a lot of Texas. This is going to not only give us beneficial rain, it's going to knock back our temperatures a little bit. Eventually some of this rain does make it into the southeast, but notice kind of the lack of the rainfall around Atlanta down through Birmingham, Montgomery, especially the Florida Georgia line. That's where we have the extreme extreme drought right now. 3 to 5 inches of rain. That is, if you were to believe the European model there for parts of Kansas over into southwestern Missouri, whereas the American model is very aggressive with putting this rain down through San Angelo, San Antonio, over towards the Waco area. But we're going to be watching for a flash flooding pretty much across the region. This is despite the fact that we have extensive drought. Sometimes when you get heavy rain that falls on really dry soil, a lot of it becomes run off of the heat that we've been having lately. Not helping with the drought situation at all tomorrow through Thursday will be watching Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. That area expands Thursday into Friday morning.
