Flash flooding in Washington, D.C. has resulted in significant disruptions, with more than five inches of rain causing many roads to become impassable. Dozens of people had to be rescued from their vehicles due to the rising waters. The severe weather is part of a broader pattern affecting over 60 million Americans from the Midwest to the Northeast, with heat, humidity, and torrential rain reported in several regions.

Elsewhere in the United States, wildfires in Oregon and Arizona have prompted emergency responses, and severe thunderstorms have caused delays at major airports in New York City. In Texas, officials have revised the number of missing people following catastrophic flooding, and lawmakers are planning a special session to improve severe weather warnings.

Flash flooding hits Washington, D.C.

We begin this Sunday with dangerous weather. New heat and flood alerts affecting more than 60 million Americans from the Midwest to the Northeast. Out West, a wildfire burning in Oregon could reach rare megafire status. You're looking at the Cram Fire, which is already the nation's largest, and could be the first this year to grow to at least 100,000 acres. CBS's Chanelle Cole is here in New York City leading us off. Chanelle, tell us more. Well, Errol, here in New York, we are seeing hot temperatures, intense humidity, and a risk of torrential rain tonight. It's a similar situation playing out in several parts of the country. Summer storms brought windshield cracking hail to Nebraska and flash flooding to the nation's capital. More than five inches of rain fell in that region Saturday, making many roads impassable. I've never seen this bad. I've lived here for 20 years. Dozens had to be rescued from their cars. In Texas, officials dramatically lowered the number of people missing from the catastrophic flooding in Kerr County from about 100 to three. They say many who were initially reported as missing have been verified as safe. The 4th of July flash flood killed at least 135 people. This week, Texas state lawmakers will hold a special session partially aimed at improving severe weather warnings. We're gonna look for strategies that we can pass laws on that will make preparation for these types of events better. And in Arizona, Governor Katie Hobbs got an aerial tour of the Grand Canyon's North Rim where a wildfire destroyed the historic lodge and visitor center. A lightning strike triggered the fire, but the National Park Service allowed it to burn as part of its confine and contain strategy during the hottest and driest period of summer. Hobbs wants to know why. It's so devastating as a lifelong Arizonan. It just is a reminder of the shared stewardship we have of this land. And back here in the Northeast, severe thunderstorms are now causing some significant delays at all three of New York City's major airports. Errol? All right, Chanel, thank you.
