Five members of Canada's 2018 World Junior Hockey team have been charged with sexual assault. That's according to police in the city of London, Ontario, who confirmed the charges on Monday and apologized to the alleged victim for the time it took to see progress in the case. This case stems from an incident on the evening of June 18, 2018, in downtown London involving players of the Canadian Junior Hockey team who were in the city to attend a Hockey Canada event. After the event, the accused and several teammates met the victim at a downtown bar and later invited her to a hotel room, where the sexual assault by the individuals now charged took place. The press conference came several days after players Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Cal Foote, Dylan Dubé, and Alex Formentin turned themselves in. Formentin is a former forward for the National Hockey League, currently playing in Switzerland, while the other four are active NHL players who have taken paid leaves of absences from their respective teams. The players deny criminal wrongdoing and no allegations have been proven. The case was originally closed in 2018 after investigators found there were insufficient grounds to lay a charge. Then in 2022, Canadian sports channel TSN reported that a woman identified only by her initials in court documents had settled a multi-million dollar lawsuit she filed against Hockey Canada and other defendants, including eight unnamed players. Investigators reopened the case later that year in response to public outrage after news of the Hockey Canada settlement came to light. The case began with a procedural video hearing Monday. The players were represented by their attorneys and did not attend themselves. The next hearing in the case is set for late April.
